Managed Firewall for VPSDime Linux VPSs

What's new. We are rolling out a managed, network-level firewall across all VPSDime Linux VPSs. A small, curated set of application ports that are the most frequent malware entry points (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Memcached, Elasticsearch, and a handful of others) is now blocked at our network edge by default. Standard services such as SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS are not affected.

How to allow access. Every VPS has a new Firewall section in its management page with two tools:

Per-Application Whitelist - open a specific blocked app to a set of source IPs or subnets.Global Whitelist - trust a source across all blocked apps on the VPS.

Your own VPSs in our fleet already talk to each other without restriction - inter-VPS traffic is whitelisted automatically.

Prefer to handle firewalling yourself? You can turn the managed firewall off on a per-VPS basis, using the Turn off firewall protection and Turn on firewall protection buttons on the same page. Your per-app and global whitelists are preserved and become active again the moment you turn it back on.

Limits. Up to 64 entries per list. IPv4 subnets accepted up to /16; IPv6 up to /48. Catch-alls (0.0.0.0/0, ::/0) are not allowed. Changes apply instantly, no restart needed.

Action. If you run any of the affected services on one of your VPSs, open its Firewall page in the client area, review the whitelist, and add any sources that need access. Full details in our How to use the network firewall article.

Alma Linux and Rocky Linux are now available

The recent announcement by Red Hat (CentOS's parent company) that they will be ending support for their popular Linux distribution, CentOS 8 at the end of 2021 has caused many people to start looking into alternative distributions.

Since then many community driven CentOS clones have emerged, Alma and Rocky Linux being the most popular ones. Therefore, we have decided to support them by making them available on our Linux and Premium VPS plans.

You can now order your new VPS with either Alma Linux or Rocky Linux on the Order Form.

They are also added to the reinstall page where you could rebuild your VPS using them.

It's finally here! The much awaited release of Debian 11 codenamed Bullseye is now available in all its glory. This new version will be supported for five years like any other stable release from Debian, and you don't want to miss out on it!

Ubuntu 20.04 is now available on Linux VPS

We are glad to announce that as of 2020-05-20, Ubuntu 20.04 is available for you to use on our Linux VPS line.

You can simply go to your client area and click Reinstall OS and choose Ubuntu 20.04 option to reinstall your VPS with it.

Alternatively, you can simply upgrade your Ubuntu 18.04 distro to Ubuntu 20.04 by issuing these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y upgrade
sudo apt install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade

Migrations from old OpenVZ 6 to OpenVZ 7

We are currently migrating OpenVZ 6 VPS's to OpenVZ 7 technology. You might notice a few minutes of downtime.

The migration involves all the Linux VPS's which are created before July 2019. Premium VPS's are not affected by this since they are using different virtualization technology.

With this migration, your VPS is going to have newer kernel with more capabilities such as Docker and Ubuntu 18.04, Debian 10, etc.

Migrations are automatic and there is no chance of data loss.

Our new nodes have higher computing capacity with faster and more reliable storage system.

If you experience any issues with your VPS, please open a ticket and we'll attend to it immediately.

Virtuozzo/OpenVZ 7 platform launch

As of July 1st, 2019, we have launched our new Linux VPS platform based on Virtuozzo/OpenVZ 7.

Virtuozzo 7 is successor of OpenVZ 6 platform. It's based on CentOS 7 with kernel 3.x.

It has the following advanges over OpenVZ 6:

- Ability to use newer Linux distros, such as Ubuntu 18.04 or Debian 10.
- Ability to use Docker.
- Newer kernel for better performance and compatibility with new software.

All the new orders are getting provisioned on our new Virtuozzo 7 platform.

The new platform is fully integrated in your client area and all the tools you need to manage your VPS have are seamless to you.

We have added usage graphs and ability to connect to VPS' out of band console integrated in your client area.

We are going to migrate all of our older generation VPS's to the new nodes starting from mid-August. If you'd like yours to be migrated to the new platform, please simply open a ticket in your client area and we'll handle your request in 24 hours.
