Premium VM is our latest offering relying on Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technology. It offers quite a lot of advantages when compared with our existing, older Linux VPS lineup.
This article is meant to shed some light on the differences to potential customers looking to make a choice.
|Metric||Premium VM||Linux VPS||Explanation|
|Virtualization Technology||Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM)||OpenVZ||KVM allows full virtualization, while OpenVZ is a containerization technology.
This means that using KVM, users can install and use any operating system they like. OpenVZ on the other hand primarily only works with Linux variants and even then comes with quite a few limitations.
|Hardware||Runs on premium-grade infrastructure utilizing Supermicro enterprise servers, high performance 3.3GHz Intel Xeon CPUs, great performing high write intensive (10 DWPD) enterprise SSDs in RAID10, and with 10Gbps connectivity.||Runs on enterprise-level Dell branded servers. lower clock E5 CPUs, mixed-use grade enterprise SSDs in RAID10, and with 10Gbps connectivity.||Our Premium VM lineup runs on bleeding edge hardware. Highly recommended for consistently resource intensive workloads. Great for database servers.|
|Operating System Support||Premium VM can run most non-Windows operating systems, this means BSD (such as OpenBSD/FreeBSD) or customized operating systems are a possibility alongside standard Linux distros.||Linux VPSes are, as their name suggests, limited to just running Linux distros.|
|Redundancy||Dual Power supply host nodes connected to UPS and diesel generator backed A+B side power feeds. Diverse fiber paths with automatic failover.||Dual Power supply host nodes connected to UPS and diesel generator backed A+B side power feeds. Diverse fiber paths with automatic failover.|
|Kernel Modification||Possible, users may manipulate their kernel as they wish. This means loading custom modules is a possibility.||Not possible, users are forced to use the host-node's kernel. Not possible to manipulate modules either.||Kernel manipulation is only possible using full virtualization|
|Dedicated Resources||Every Premium VPS comes with resources dedicated solely to you; enjoy our usual excellent support with no load or CPU limitations to hold you back.||Processing resources are shared. Users are REQUIRED to control their 15-min system load to remain below 2.0 at all times.||Memory and storage space are both dedicated per VPS on both lines.|
|Nightly Backups||Yes, included by default in price. For more information, please see this link.||Available as an add-on, has to be purchased separately.|
|Console Access||Console access is provided for every Premium VPS.||Currently not available.||Also known as a "rescue console," you can access the VM's operating system even when the system does not have network connectivity on our premium VMs.|
|Support for Special Management Panels||Fully supported||Typically not supported||Many of these panels need to run a custom kernel or load custom kernel modules, which means they need full virtualization only available with Premium VMs. Examples include - ServerPilot / R1Soft Server Backup Agents and so on.|
