Getting your data from a suspended VPS

What this is

Your VPS was suspended, usually over an unpaid invoice, and you've decided not to continue the service, but your data is still on it. You don't have to lose it: contact us and we'll unsuspend the VPS for 24 hours so you can download what you need.

How it works

  1. Open a ticket and ask for temporary access to back up your data. Mention the VPS hostname or IP.
  2. We unsuspend the VPS for 24 hours. It comes back online exactly as it was.
  3. Copy your data off. For most setups that's an SFTP download or an rsync to another machine; databases deserve a proper dump rather than raw files.
  4. After the window, the VPS returns to suspended, and the normal billing schedule continues.

Mind the deadline

Suspension keeps your data; termination deletes it permanently. On the standard schedule a service is terminated when its invoice reaches 10 days overdue, so ask for the access window while the service is still suspended. After termination there is nothing left to recover.

Of course, if you'd rather keep the VPS, just pay the overdue invoice, reactivation is automatic within minutes, with no fee.

Still need help?

You can open a support ticket. So we can help on the first reply, it's worth mentioning:

  • the VPS hostname or IP,
  • that you'd like a temporary unsuspension to back up data,
  • roughly how much data you need to move, if you know it.
  • "Can I get temporary access to my suspended VPS to download my data before it's deleted?"
  • "My VPS is suspended, how do I get my files off it?"
  • "Can you unsuspend my server so I can back it up?"
  • "How long do I have before my suspended VPS is deleted?"
  • "Can I recover data after my VPS was terminated?"
